In hazard materials consulting, there is a stark difference between reacting to a problem and preventing it. While reactive testing occurs after an incident has already compromised a site, proactive testing, which accounts for 95% of Agon Environmental’s work, empowers informed, timely decision-making.
At Agon, we believe that prior knowledge of hazards is the only way to manage risk effectively. Whether it’s a comprehensive survey before demolition or verifying imported materials, proactive testing ensures that “surprises” never become costly liabilities.
The Limits of Standard Testing
Polarised Light Microscopy (PLM) has been the industry standard for decades. Popular for its simplicity and low detection limits, PLM relies on visible light to identify asbestos fibres. But this reliance comes with physical limitations. Ultra-small fibres or those coated with micro-fine particles can remain invisible under a microscope, leading to false negatives.
Materials like vinyl floor tiles often present this challenge. The PVC binder can “mask” chrysotile fibres, preventing detection even after muffle furnace treatment. For critical projects, relying solely on PLM introduces risk that could compromise safety and compliance.
The Agon Advantage: XRD Analysis
Agon overcomes these limitations by combining PLM with X-ray Diffraction (XRD). Unlike PLM, XRD identifies substances by their unique crystal structure rather than their visible shape.
XRD is “blind” to size, shape, or coatings. Even fibres too small for a microscope or hidden under other materials are detected reliably. In our labs, the PLM/XRD combination is transformative: what may appear as a false negative under a microscope is confirmed and identified with certainty in minutes.
The 50x Rule: Proactive vs. Reactive Costs
The financial benefits of proactive testing are substantial. Consider a shipment of artificial stone benchtops imported into Australia, where the 1% crystalline silica limit is strictly enforced.
-
Proactive path:
The factory sends a sample to Agon’s Adelaide XRD lab for pre-testing.
With a recognised certificate, Australian Border Force (ABF) clears the
container immediately on arrival.
-
Reactive path:
Without pre-testing, the container is flagged, held in a secure yard, and
subject to inspection delays, courier times, and daily storage fees. Costs
can quickly reach 50 times
the price of the initial proactive test.
In this industry, time is money, and certainty is the only currency that truly matters.
Challenging Common Misconceptions
Our team brings 15–50 years of hands-on experience to every sample, spanning decades of asbestos identification, complex testing, and challenging historical cases. Over time, we’ve learned that assumptions about materials, age, or prior testing are the greatest risk to project safety:
-
Modern products may not be “asbestos-free”:
Different countries apply different definitions and thresholds. In
Australia, the practical detection limit is 0.01%, effectively zero.
Products deemed compliant elsewhere may still fail Australian
standards.
-
Maintenance history isn’t always reliable:
If a building’s history is undocumented, don’t assume all linings or
claddings are the same age. In a 1970’s house, a single replaced breacher
panel following a water leak can turn a seemingly “clean” room into a
hazardous one if only that panel is subsequently sampled.
-
Products from the ‘asbestos era’ may still surprise you:
Asbestos fibres have highly desirable physical and chemical attributes.
For decades, they were added to a vast range of products to improve
durability, strength, and heat resistance. Don’t assume that materials
manufactured during the asbestos era are asbestos-free; novel historical
applications are still being uncovered by laboratories today.
